Excerpt
Intel aims for notebook computer market with new products and several flash memory products.
The Flash Memory Card is a memory card based on flash memory technology. Flash memory is nonvolatile (it retains data when the power is turned off).
Intel says the credit card-sized package increases a portable PC’s performance and durability, while reducing its power consumption (compared with traditional mechanical disk drives). Intel claims that portable PCs using flash memory could see a 10 to 100 -fold increase in battery life over portable systems using mechanical memory devices, due to the low power needs of solid-state electronics.
The Flash Memory Card is available in 1 -Mbyte and 4-Mbyte densities, priced at $298 and $1,198, respectively, in 1,000 piece quantities.

Claims
Memory manager with file allocation table
A manager for a computer memory comprising:
a block allocation routine, the memory divided into blocks of memory locations, each block having an allocation table and a data region divided into data areas, each allocation table having entries corresponding to region data areas, the block allocation routine for selecting a block in which to store data;
a data area allocation routine for selecting a data area within the data region for the selected block in which to store data, for selecting an allocation table entry to correspond to the selected data area, and for setting the selected allocation table entry to correspond to the selected data area and to an allocated state; and
a storage routine for storing data in the selected data area.
